I don't wanna wait...
BY SIMBOOKER UPDATED ON FEBRUARY 23RD 2015
A hit show for the WB channel; Dawson's Creek as I post this, has been in syndication for about ten years. A LONG TIME!! Many years ago, I had heard about it, and had slightly more than just a passing interest. But, at that time, I never really got around to watching it.
Forward a couple years; I began watching the first two and a half seasons on Sony TV. I liked many of the episodes; but it was still early days. Plus I had three and half more seasons to get through. I knew I liked the Creek, but it was too early to tell if it would leave a lasting impression on me. It has now become my second favourite TV show of all time: below Will and Grace and just above The Cosby Show; my two other loves.
I classify TV shows in the broad sense of the word.
So comedy and drama is all inclusive.
I'm not usually giddy for teen flicks or high school dramas; at least, not since my early adolescence or mid teens.
These days I like to hang out mostly at the Food Network, Crime and Investigation Channels, Travel and Movie Channels. But unlike many shows, Dawson's Creek doesn't feel "Hollywood" at all. This is not Beverly Hills 90210! There are no fancy frills; no big production, no pretentiousness, and there isn't much false glamour. Instead, we see real people with real problems. DC doesn't feel contrived. And surprisingly, DC doesn't feel like your average high school teen DRAMA.
It's so much better, and has more substance than nearly all the TV dramas I've seen sprout up in the last ten years.

Okay, so here's where the story picks up. I stopped watching Dawson's Creek for a while, after the first two and a half seasons to be accurate. I was busy with other things in my life, the good, and the bad. And then one day, something spiritual came over me, like a calling. I felt I had unfinished business with Dawson's Creek, I felt I needed to get back to it. It's an understatement to say that the challenges of life, lead me to seek solace and refuge. I wanted to get back to the small town of Capeside,
and escape to a place that felt like home.
and escape to a place that felt like home.
So, I picked Dawson's Creek up again, and I'm back in the swing of it, as if I'd never left. I have caught up with all 6 seasons, watched the EPISODES back to back, and MY FAVORITES over again. I've gotten to know the characters. And well... I'M ADDICTED! I wasn't expecting this SHOW to have the affect on me, that it now has.
"It's almost as if I've needed to watch it like I needed the air to breathe."
It has been a great comfort to me, and a great escape from "THE REAL WORLD." Yet like many things in life, the sweet is often accompanied with a little bit of the sour. It seems besides food, I can never fully enjoy something without feeling a tinge of sadness. As well as bringing me immense joy, DC has also managed to open up old wounds, and conflicting feelings within me. This outstanding show has definitely brought
me some degree of pain. But I'll get to that later.

Now I will readily admit, the script writing is not flawless. In fact, sometimes I feel the writers didn’t know what direction to turn to; with some of its muddled story lines, twisted love triangles, and relationships that finish before they really get started. The explanation for this is quite logical. You see, on a TV Show there are many different people working behind the scenes; people who have very different ideas and opinions about what should go into a script. These conflicting ideas, and power struggles can sometimes collide and erupt. There has to be give and take;
which often lead to disagreements.
Now and then, a compromise is made on a viable story line. If it works great, if it doesn't well there is so much on the line. Plus there is the time frame issue to worry about. Everything has to be decided and finished before an episode goes on air. There is also the money issue. The storylines have to draw viewers. In other words, one minute you might be hot; the next minute you may not be. You may have to come up with a different formula, in a very limited time frame in order
to bring back viewers, or keep them.
The success of a TV Show is all about ratings, and that's the plain and simple truth.

The Creek, A view from Dawson's home
So let me get to the reasons why I love this show so much: First of all, the location, Capeside: beautiful, scenic, serene, quaint; with an enticing small town "homely" charm. Now, I'm not a small town gal at all. I have always preferred the city, but I would happily live in the small cosseted town of Capeside. Capeside is a fictional town in New England, but actually shot in the Wilmington, North Carolina area. When watching the show my mind never believes that the characters are in New England. I see North Carolina as it is, in all its splendour and glory.
The natural beauty of this very picturesque part of the United States was captured superbly. And for me, the location is a huge part of the show's appeal. Dawson's Creek just wouldn't work in Miami, New York, or Los Angeles. There is just something about that Creek; that small town, that place. It's a place that soothes my soul and warms my heart. But essentially, it’s the characters that keep me hooked.
Now, onto the three main characters, plus one supporting character. As far as I'm concerned the casting was perfect. All of the main actors did an exceptional job of portraying their characters. But of course, there was one that shined brightly, above all others.
For one, I simply cannot get enough of Pacey Witter; who in my opinion is the heartbeat, driving force, and engine of the show. Pacey Witter is intoxicating, addictive, irreverent, adorable, pervasive, all-encompassing, and so much more. There aren't enough adjectives in which to describe him. He's that special. God he's so special that I wish he really existed, and in my fantasy he does. He simply has to.
Pacey exists through the enormously talented and effortlessly charismatic Joshua Jackson, who did a superb job of portraying him.

I'd like to make the point, that I see Pacey Witter and Joshua Jackson as two separate people. I have to respect the fact that Joshua Jackson is not Pacey Witter, and I do. It's the same thing for all the other actors. I think many people make the mistake of thinking of actors as the characters they play, and the truth is they are not. No actor should feel pressured to live up to a fictional image. Acting is a job; a craft, an art form.
But, Pacey is perhaps the greatest work of art of all.
But, Pacey is perhaps the greatest work of art of all.
Subconsciously, Pacey has always been my favorite, from the start. Pacey is indeed the BAD BOY of the Creek: the rebellious one, the daring one, the one that draws you in, the one that keeps things racy, and exciting. I am not the only one who can't get enough of Pacey Witter. In fact, Pacey was the most popular character on the show. Some fans have said, that he's basically the entire reason they tuned in to watch. I wouldn't go that far, or be that extreme about it. But yeah, without Pacey the show would not have that extra special tinge-that magic spark.
That leaves Dawson Leery, Joey Potter, and Jen Lindley-the supporting character. Dawson was originally penned as the central character; hence, the name Dawson's Creek. But I have come to find that he is the most disliked, and even hated character by the fans of the show. I think this is very unfair.
On the other hand, there are a small percentage of fans who have Dawson's back. Some of these fans feel extremely jaded by the fact he didn't get the girl in the end. But by and large, Dawson is simply not liked. I find myself laughing in hysterics reading the comments people make about him. They vary from the extremely funny, to the downright rude, or simply bizarre. Yet I understand the disdain to a point, even if I may not entirely agree.
I have a completely platonic love for Dawson. I admire Dawson's sensitivity; the fact he's introspective; kind, caring, thoughtful, extremely intelligent, and much wiser than his age would suggest. Many fans would not agree that he's kind or caring. But if you were to watch every episode of Dawson's Creek with an open mind; you will see many examples of his virtues. He simply doesn't have an evil bone in his body.
Dawson doesn't have the charisma that Pacey has, but then who does? No one on the face of this planet! But that doesn't mean he isn't a valuable asset to the show.
Dawson is the reserved guy, slightly nerdy, somewhat geeky, and persistently neurotic. Those attributes probably annoy some, but not me. His positive attributes far outweigh his shortcomings. No doubt, Dawson has many flaws, as do all the characters. But when it gets right down to it, he has a good heart, and honest intentions.
After all the heartache and betrayal of the Pacey and Joey debacle; he still offered her a ton of money to go to Worthington. He also risked his life to save Pacey in the storm, long after Pacey had betrayed him with Joey. How can he be so hated? Dawson is someone that will come through for you, when you really need him. People as noble as he is, are few and far between. Anyone would be extremely fortunate to have a childhood friend like Dawson.
For me Dawson's character is important to the show, because you need a character to give a show balance. If Dawson Leery was as wild, impulsive, and rebellious as Pacey Witter, neither would be able to stand out. There is nearly always one character that's going to shine, and that just happens to be Pacey.

Now Pacey is simply a joy to watch, a pleasure principle; he's the James Dean of the show, except he's the rebel with a cause!! Sometimes I'm just smiling in the midst of watching his scenes. Especially in Seasons 3 and 4. I even have a smile on my face just thinking about him now.
I love him with an ALL CONSUMING intensity that knows no boundaries.
I love him with an ALL CONSUMING intensity that knows no boundaries.
My favourite television character of all time is Jack Mcfarland of Will and Grace. Pacey Witter is a very close second, BUT for very different reasons. You see, Pacey captured my heart in a way Dawson never could; the same way he captured Joey's heart, and all the other females on the show. Not to mention the thousands of DC fans who are in awe of him. I could literally write an essay on Pacey, but I have to get onto the other characters. I will come back to him though. I have to.
Jen Lindley, played by Michelle Williams is supposed to be one of the main characters in this show. But as the Seasons progress and especially in Seasons 3 and 4 she becomes more of a supporting character.
I first saw Michelle in Brokeback Mountain. She was evidently a very talented actress, though admittedly I didn't care much for the film. In Dawson's Creek, one gets to see her as she's starting out in her acting career. She's introduced as the quintessential "babe" of the show, and adds a refreshing face in the early stages of Dawson's Creek.
I grew to have great affection for Jen as a person. She was truly a wonderful and caring person,
and I will never forgive the writers for what they did to her.
Jen remains an important person in Dawson's life throughout the series. She is no substitute for Joey, of course. But she's by Dawson's side in his most seminal moments. For instance, she is the first woman Dawson is physically attracted to (at least for the audience to see), she's the first woman Dawson dates. She's there for Dawson when Joey ditches him to spend summer with Pacey. And she's the first woman Dawson takes the next step with. Therefore, she is fully ingrained in the history books of DC.
But over the course of the series it becomes blatantly apparent that Jen is just a sideshow. Her story lines are completely overshadowed by her female counterpart Joey Potter. To put it mildly, or not so; her story lines with Jack don't really interest me at all. I wish the writers hadn't written her boyfriend Henry out of the series so abruptly. As a couple, Jen and Henry held my attention. But after he left, I lost interest in Jen Lindley. Whatever was going on in her life was frankly not as compelling as the storyline that would eventually take centre stage,
and become the defining story line of the series.

Joey Potter played by Katie Holmes is my second favorite character in the show. For me, she's the female heartbeat, and secondary driving force of the show. She's the cute dough-eyed girl next door; wholesome, moral, graceful, dignified, kind, virtuous, and much more. Even though she was popular with the fans, she was a divisive character; much loved, but also much disliked. Many have said she was an uptight prude. That may be true, to an albeit limited extent in my opinion. But I think some of her flaws and perceived negative characteristics were a huge part of her appeal.
Her old fashioned values, indecisiveness, and vulnerability, set her apart, and made her special. Now, I understand that Pacey Witter IS and WAS the star. I'm a very independent minded person, and I'm rarely swayed by the opinion of others. Yet I am totally in sync with the majority of Dawson Creek fans on the subject of Pacey. But it's without question that Joey helped him to maintain his influence and potency. And it's because of Joey, that Pacey arguably became the most important character on Dawson's Creek. Pacey and Joey were simply magical together.

The love story that develops between Pacey and Joey in Season 3, and the anticipation of Dawson finding out, is when DC hits a
winning stride and reaches its ultimate peak.

The Longest Day: Pacey and Joey discuss telling Dawson that they've fallen for each other. They don't know that he already knows.
Pacey and Joey became the defining couple
and story line for the entire show
Joey and Dawson
Now some fans have said; that there is no chemistry between Joey and Dawson. I don't agree at all. With all due respect, that's a load of twaddle! Had there been no chemistry between the primary characters, the show would not have succeeded in the first place. And, the major love triangle which became the biggest story line of the entire show, would not have been captivating; neither would it have made such an impact on fans. There is no doubt that Joey had more romantic chemistry with Pacey. But she had a unique chemistry with Dawson too, both as a friend, and as a girlfriend.
One of my favorite scenes between Joey and Dawson, are in the last part of the episode, Four Stories; this also happens to be one of my favorite episodes, although it's not in my top ten. The scenes in this episode are shot beautifully; and because they are shot exclusively between Dawson and Joey, one really gets to see their chemistry. I love how natural the scenes are, and how connected they seem with each other; despite their obvious friction. They go for a bite to eat, and then a stroll in a very romantic setting, against a stunning backdrop. Eventually Dawson asks Joey a very personal question, which makes the scene tense. It's beautifully acted out and composed.
That is just one of many touching scenes between Joey and Dawson. The relationship between Joey and Dawson is a very special, heartfelt, and priceless one. It is a relationship to be envied, because it's pure, powerful; loyal for the most part; eternal and everlasting. It's a relationship that stands the test of time, whether they remain friends or more than friends, they'll always have a special bond. But once Pacey essentially steals Joey's heart, nothing can compare with the passion between them.
The chemistry between Joey Potter and Pacey Witter, are some of the most captivating, and electric, that I have ever witnessed between two characters. It was a stroke of genius that these two were eventually brought together in the show. Apparently the infamous kiss; initiated by Pacey, and what ensued, was a billion dollar kick start to the show, and one of the major reasons that kept Dawson's Creek running for 6 seasons, and 128 episodes.

Pacey and Joey. How can one explain such magnetic chemistry? The likes in which I have never witnessed before. I think of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in Pretty Woman, they had mad chemistry, it was awesome! Bella and Edward also have amazing chemistry in Twilight. Max and Stacey in the British soap East-Enders, had me on the edge of my seat, they were incredible together. But let me tell you, Joey and Pacey knock all these unions from their perch. What can I say? You watch a show and many of us live vicariously through the characters in one way or another. The Pacey and Joey union was a goldmine. I love how their relationship builds in the early stages, I love how it develops and grows, and I love the ultimate surrender in
A Winter's Tale. Oh, how I wish they had continued into Season 5.
But unfortunately Joey and Pacey end things for far too long.

Season 5 A Total Disaster
After their final prom in Season 4. Pacey and Joey end their romance, and their relationship goes downhill. Once everyone leaves Capeside, and the most captivating love story ever to grace a television show ends, everything goes wrong. The less I comment on Season 5 the better. It actually pains me to talk about it. In the midst of watching Season 5 I simply had to look away; I felt nauseous, sick, and pitiful. Always in the back of my mind was Pacey and Joey; they belong together. I felt nostalgic. How could Pacey let her go?
"I simply don't get the Pacey and Audrey relationship."
The writers really screwed up a great deal here. The final two seasons of Dawson's Creek are the worst in my opinion. For one thing, I simply don't get the Pacey and Audrey relationship. I don't feel that the writers did the show justice by including this worthless, insignificant, and meaningless relationship into the script. And there were many other meaningless pairings, like Joey and Eddie-YUK! How these lackluster romances were even conceived of is beyond me. Conceptually they made no good sense.

The less I write about Audrey the better, because just mentioning her gives me a headache. The bottom line is, Audrey and Pacey should have been nothing more than a casual fling.
She belonged in another show. Not Dawson's Creek.
But I digress for a moment. One of the best things about Season 4 was Gretchen Witter. In fact, had it not been for the magnetic power of the Joey and Pacey union; Gretchen and Dawson could have been a compelling lead couple. Paul Stupin didn't think so, but I do. Gretchen Witter was a fabulous character, with a great presence and a sparkle in her eyes. I wish the writers would have stuck with her, and developed her character even further into season 5. She definitely had an aura and presence about her.

As I waded through the puddles, mud slides, and disaster that was Season 5, to be perfectly honest, I couldn't wait for it to be over. I was so reminiscent of all the many wonders of Season 4. One of the highlights was Gretchen Witter, who made the pain of losing Joey to Pacey, a lot more bearable for Dawson. I sometimes try to pretend that Season 5 doesn't exist.
The Song Remains The Same
Season 6 takes a while to recover from the dismal and terrible Season 5. Ok, so I've trashed season 5 and I need to stop; there were some promising moments, but they were few
and far between unfortunately.
Dawson and Joey finally have their moment, which had to happen. Even if it was only for Joey to see for herself, that Pacey was actually always the one. In fact this episode has some nice and captivating moments. If it wasn't for Pacey and Audrey I would have enjoyed this episode a lot more. There's no doubt that Dawson and Joey love each other, and it's actually nice seeing them together, and witnessing their special everlasting bond. Joey is soo damn lucky! But as always everything is so complicated between them, and there is a dilemma in which Joey totally overreacts. But there is one big factor standing in their way.... and it's something that always will.
It's music to my ears when I hear Pacey say in around about way, that he never really loved Audrey. But he doesn't simply run back to Joey. In fact it takes a while for that to happen; far too long, in my opinion.

I would have been satisfied if it ended like this,
because Dawson was a great guy, who really loved Joey and she loved him. But thankfully this was an unattainable dream for Dawson
The Final Episode
I've only managed to watch the last episode of Dawson's Creek in full once. I can only keep my sanity watching up to the part before Jen collapses. After that I've forwarded it to the end twice, and the last time I did so I let it run until the end. But I was in fits of tears and sobs. It's a very good episode, one of the best, but way too sad for me. The final curtain call for this series simply breaks my heart, makes me feel vulnerable, and filled me with emotions that I felt uncomfortable dealing with. I watch the show in part to lift my spirits; I don't want to watch the show feeling deep despair.
The song they chose to end the show with "Say Goodnight, Not Goodbye" didn't help either. Then there were the nostalgic scenes that they run at the end…oh please, let me stop there. It's too sad for words.
Over the course of the seasons, Dawson's Creek reacquainted me with teenage love and angst; that passion, that hunger, that torment. That's part of what is so endearing about the show; the reality of relationships in all facades; platonic, kin-ships and friendships, and the emotions they bring. As well as the curve balls that life throws at you. And as much as the show has been an absolute escape for me: as well as source of great comfort, it has also reignited painful longings, heart pangs, and other intense feelings that I'd rather not have to confront.
But Beyond the sadness, I am glad that I returned to Dawson's Creek. I am glad that I experienced everything this remarkable show had to offer. I am glad that I got to know Dawson, Joey, and the unforgettable Pacey. I am glad that this show will always have a place in my heart. That I can take my DVD box set and pop them in the Player anytime I want, and vicariously relive all the magic. I'm glad that this show will never really end; not in my mind or my heart. As I go through life,
I'll always take Capeside with me.
I had already settled this feeling within myself, and I've long been at peace with it. But it further established the point. You don't have to end up with your first love. Your first love certainly doesn't have to be your last, or the only person that can be right for you.
Once again, beyond the sadness, I'm glad that Joey chose Pacey in the end.
When you have the Pacey Factor; there is only one way you should go. And you have to go with the flow. And go with the almighty Power of Pacey. There was simply too much sexual magnetism between Joey and Pacey. Joey will always love Dawson, but her aching heart is ultimately owned by Pacey.
